The Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men (CHUMM) are an ecumenical group of men and women volunteers from all walks of faith, bonded together with the sole purpose of providing compassionate assistance to those most in need on Hatteras Island, without stipulation or discrimination.

CHUMM works hand-in-hand with other relief organizations, state and federal government agencies, local businesses, church groups, and volunteers to provide an early response to storm and flood victims. When storms hit the Outer Banks, CHUMM is an early responder to help victims with emergency shelter, food, medical or other financial assistance needs.

And after the storms have passed, CHUMM continues to provide help through its long-term recovery efforts, including assistance to those impacted by unemployment, illness, injury or other events outside their control.

In addition, CHUMM operates the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry, which provides those most in need with groceries and other household staples. The Food Pantry is housed at the Buxton United Methodist Church and is maintained year-round through partnerships with local businesses and the donations of time and financial resources of volunteers.

Since its founding in 1978, CHUMM has fed more than 19,000 people and spent $2,000,000+ fixing damaged roofs, replacing siding, repairing flood-damaged floors, eradicating mold, building wheelchair ramps, replacing insulation, buying medicine, helping fund emergency medical or dental care, or simply keeping the lights and heat on for disadvantaged individuals.  And these estimates don’t even begin to include the hundreds of thousands of man-hours freely given by the dedicated men and women of CHUMM.

Here’s the most amazing part of the CHUMM story: it has no administrative overhead costs. None. Its volunteers literally pay their own expenses. That means that 100% of all donations to CHUMM are used to provide emergency assistance to those in need.

CHUMM is funded by contributions from generous individuals, businesses, and organizations.
